While they were in town for the screening, I had a chance to chat with Guy and Tim about their New Zealand roots, the podcast’s genesis, their thoughts looking back on the year, and what a project like this ultimately means. One gets the sense they could strike a comedic chord reading the phonebook to each other. And this is thanks to the rapport of its hosts Tim and Guy have the kind of chemistry that elevates their discussion from merely amusing to truly dynamic. Of course, however it’s interpreted, The Worst Idea of All Time is first and foremost hilarious. In creating the podcast, Guy and Tim have hit on something that clearly resonates with a sizable audience. From a modern or postmodern context, the show can be interpreted as commentary on the nature of obsessive completionism, or, on the repetitive and unoriginal nature of the films that contemporary Hollywood is producing so consistently. All of this, remember, is to watch and review Grown Ups 2.

This one, in particular, highlights the insanity of the project: Guy is literally on the other side of the world attending the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, while Tim is back home in New Zealand. They watch the movie together over Skype, though because of the time change and a spotty Internet connection, Tim has to record his half of the podcast from his kitchen at whisper volume in the middle of the night so as not to wake his roommates.

If you’re new to The Worst Idea of All Time, I recommend beginning at the beginning so as to get the full effect of the duo’s clever insight coupled with the rapid descent into madness brought on by multiple viewings of this horrible film. If you’re just looking for a single good episode however, may I suggest episode 25, “Matafeo”. The reason for this is obvious to anyone who’s listened to the podcast. They got matching tattoos of Patrick Schwarzenegger’s face on their posteriors.(Significantly, Sex and the City 2 is two and a half hours long.) They announced the second season of The Worst Idea of All Time, set to begin later this month, wherein the pair will be watching and reviewing Sex and the City 2 every week for a year.

The film stars a very popular cast consisting of talented actors and actresses like Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Salma Hayak and Maya Rudolph. Grown Ups 2 is a Hollywood comedy film that came out in 2013.
